The connection of the Inquisition to the Academy is shown in a flashback to 1490. A Spanish girl in a jail cell hears the sound of someone chisseling through the wall. The unseen woman on the other side of the wall, after having stayed in the cell for sixteen years, has severed her finger, and used the bone as her instrument.
She has written a message on the wall in English, which she cannot understand, and hopes the newer girl can translate:
In the present, as Jade is being delivered the same message by another Megan, Casey is in a class learning about Tomas de Torquemada, who was the Grand Inquisitor during the time of the first scene. Not listening to the teacher, she scribbles the same message in her notebook.
